Navigator Program FAQs
Can my parent/guardian or other support member be involved in this process?
Parents/guardians and support members can be copied on emails between you and the Navigator. We ask that all outside support members play a behind-the-scenes role and that one-on-one sessions are between you and the Navigator. Parents/supports should not be communicating directly with the Navigator, rather communications should be between you and the Navigator at all times. We ask this as a means of helping to promote your autonomy and growth, and your confidence in taking on the job search independently in the future.
I don’t know how to use Google Docs. What should I do?
If you do not have experience using Google Docs, we recommend watching the following video on creating, editing, and sharing a file using Google Docs.
I don’t have experience setting up a virtual meeting (google meet, zoom, etc.). What should I do?
If you do not have experience setting up a virtual meeting, we recommend watching the following tutorial videos.
What the Navigator isn’t (i.e., finding a job seeker a job, therapists, etc.).
The role of the Navigator is to be a coach/mentor through a portion of the job search process. Navigators can help you with resumes, cover letters, interview prep, and general job search advice. A Navigator is not a career counselor, which means they can provide general career advice but are not finding a job for you. Conversations with Navigators should remain focused on the job search process; a Navigator is not a therapist or mental health provider. Lastly, Navigators will not be writing the resume or cover letter for you or making direct edits to your materials. The Navigator will provide feedback as comments and suggestions on your documents, but it is ultimately up to you to make all changes.
Can I come back to receive assistance in the future?
Yes. Job seekers are welcome to come back in the future to work on additional aspects of the job search. For example, say you complete the resume with your Navigator and elect to stop your services there. You can then come back in the future to work on the cover letter or interview prep with a Navigator. We cannot promise that you will be placed with the same Navigator they initially worked with though.
