Interviewing can present unique challenges for many autistic job seekers, but asking for accommodations in advance can sometimes help.
Examples of interview accommodations can include requesting or asking for:
- a copy of questions in advance of an interview
- one-on-one interviews instead of a panel interview with multiple interviewers
- time extensions or multiple attempts for on-demand interviews
- phone interviews instead of video interviews or being allowed to have their camera off during a video interview
It is important to mention that just because a job seeker request a specific accommodation doesn’t always mean that an employer will provide it. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), accommodations are determined using an interactive process, meaning that an autistic candidate and employer work together to decide what is considered reasonable and appropriate.
How can you help your loved one with requesting interview accommodations? Here are some recommendations to help you get started:
- Have a conversation with them about disclosure to see if they are comfortable sharing this information with prospective employers
- Assist with identifying appropriate interview accommodations that will help them succeed during an interview
- You might need to practice or conduct mock interviews to identify the most beneficial accommodations. For example, you might practice interviewing without sharing questions in advance and then practice again where you provide a list of different questions but give them time to review and prepare before your actual interview session. Following your session, if and/or how much they were able to improve when questions were shared with them.
- Help them craft an accommodations request letter to send in advance of an interview
