SUMMARY:Untapped Potential: Reimagining Equity for Workers With Gaps in Employment History
DESCRIPTION:U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) Chair Charlotte A. Burrows and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) Director Jenny R. Yang will host a livestream discussion on challenges workers face when reentering the workforce after periods of unemployment. \nAs employers confront changing labor market dynamics\, many are searching for strategies to recruit and hire from new and diverse talent sources. Yet\, many employers routinely decline to hire applicants with gaps in their employment history. Such practices screen out otherwise qualified applicants from underrepresented groups\, including caregivers\, older workers seeking to re-enter the workforce\, people with long-term disabilities\, and formerly incarcerated individuals. Speakers will highlight the barriers that individuals with gaps in employment history face when looking for good jobs\, the strengths these workers offer to employers\, and promising practices recruiters and hiring officials can use to attract this untapped talent. \nWHEN: April 28\, 2022\, 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. EDT \nSPEAKERS: \n\nCharlotte A. Burrows\, Chair\, EEOC\nJenny R. Yang\, Director\, OFCCP\nEve Hill\, Chair\, Board of Trustees\, Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law and Partner\, Brown\, Goldstein & Levy\nTeresa Y. Hodge\, Executive Director\, Mission: Launch\nElizabeth Gedmark\, Vice President\, A Better Balance\nHeather Tinsley-Fix\, Senior Advisor\, Financial Resilience\, AARP\nAdditional Speakers TBD\n\nREGISTER:  https://eeoc.zoomgov.com/webinar/register/WN_hwUhHWDuSO2yLfV4NSCn5w \nRegistration is required and there is no cost. Video/Dial-in information will be sent separately upon registration. Livestream overflow will be on the EEOC’s YouTube page.

Each of their journeys demonstrates how workplace inclusion and acceptance benefits us all. \nIn this 30-minute session\, we’ll introduce you to four of our neurodivergent associates currently working with CAI Neurodiverse Solutions. You’ll hear their stories and learn more about:\n• Experiences growing up in the neurodiverse community\n• Neurodiversity’s influence on securing employment\n• The value neurodiversity brings to the workplace\n• How workplace inclusion and acceptance can change lives

SUMMARY:From Compliance to Programmatic Accessibility: Best Practices for American Job Centers
DESCRIPTION:In the 8 years since the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) was passed into law\, the American economy has profoundly changed. Major structural changes among industries\, companies\, and contractors have accelerated thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic and new economic policies from the Biden Administration. Throughout these tumultuous years\, American Job Centers (AJCs) / America’s Job Centers of California (AJCCs) have been crucial for the delivery of workforce services to thousands of workers. As the labor force participation rate for workers with disabilities rapidly increases to historical highs\, job seekers with disabilities need supports and services that will meet their needs and help them earn an income. However\, the working professionals at AJCs/AJCCs may not have received any formal training on disability etiquette\, accessibility\, assistive technology\, or best practices. \nThis webinar will offer a high-level overview of proven practices and lessons learned for serving jobseekers with disabilities through the workforce development system. Learn from a subject matter expert who has collected simple\, practical\, and cost-effective solutions to help advance opportunities for jobseekers with disabilities. \nThis webinar is free and will include ASL/live captioning. \nSpeaker Bio\n \nPhilip Kahn-Pauli \n\nPhilip Kahn-Pauli is the Policy and Practices Director of RespectAbility\, a nonprofit organization fighting stigmas and advancing opportunities so people with disabilities can fully participate in all aspects of the community. He educates leaders at the federal and state level about best practices to expand opportunities for people with disabilities. Kahn-Pauli coordinated the development and distribution of the People with Disabilities at Work resource guide\, the Finding a Job as a Person With a Disability in Los Angeles Toolkit\, and numerous other resources for jobseekers with disabilities as well as policymakers. He frequently organizes accessible webinars on best practices\, which are attended by workforce boards\, agencies\, VR\, disability organizations\, public officials\, artists and more – reaching a national audience of more than 2\,000. Kahn-Pauli also speaks at national and regional conferences for workforce boards\, agencies and professionals. \nKahn-Pauli serves as the co-chair of the Employment and Training Task Force of the Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD). He works with more than 110 national disability organizations to impact federal policy and move the disability employment agenda forward at the national level. At the state level\, Kahn-Pauli advocates for cost effective solutions\, replicable models and school-to-work transition programs for youth with disabilities. \nKahn-Pauli’s career in disability began with several years of work at a local nonprofit focused on traumatic brain injury. He holds a master’s degree in social policy and philosophy from the George Washington University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Denver.

SUMMARY:Intersectionality and Neurodiversity in the Workplace
DESCRIPTION:When we look through the lens of intersectionality through neurodiversity\, the neurodistinct workforce can experience huge opportunities – such as innovative thinking\, problem solving\, and new ideas. However\, others can experience compounding difficulties and biases in the workplace. \nAlthough public awareness of neurodiversity in society and in the workplace is growing\, neurodistinctiveness can be over-associated with young\, cis-gender\, white males. In fact\, neurodistinctiveness cuts across all demographic lines\, from gender to ethnicity\, age and sexuality. In this webinar\, we will explore the important – and sometimes complex – dynamics around intersectional identities in the workplace as they relate to neurodiversity. \nJoin us April 12th at 11:00am EST\, 4:00pm GMT\, Amanda! In this virtual session\, we will be discussing: \n• What do we mean when we refer to intersectionality relating to neurodiversity – and why does it matter?\n• What are the complexities of being a part of multiple minority groups in the workplace?\n• As an organization\, what are the real business benefits of being inclusive of multiple (all!) identities?\n• How can we all actively contribute to work cultures in which people feel comfortable bringing their full selves to work?

SUMMARY:Accessibility in the Federal Workspace
DESCRIPTION:Federal workspaces must be fully accessible to employees with disabilities\, as underscored by President Biden’s Executive Order to Advance Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion\, and Accessibility (DEIA) in the Federal Workforce. They must be designed and built to be accessible as required by the Architectural Barriers Act which ensures access to federally funded facilities. Digital workspaces\, including information and communication technology used by federal agencies\, must be accessible as well under Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. This session will review accessibility requirements for employee work areas in the ABA Accessibility Standards (ABAAS)\, including provisions for accessible routes\, parking\, entrances\, workspaces\, break rooms\, locker rooms\, and other areas. Presenters will also review requirements in the Section 508 Standards for computers\, telecommunications equipment\, software\, websites\, information kiosks and transaction machines\, and electronic documents. Questions can be submitted in advance of the session or can be posed during the live webinar. This webinar will include video remote interpreting (VRI) and real-time captioning. Webinar attendees can earn continuing education credits.
